Thommen only have the one main board range - each size in the X series is designed as a “one board solution for all intermediate sailors”.
ON THE WATER
The board feels quite thin underfoot, the volume being spread out over a fairly long and wide planshape. It is reasonably quick to plane, and if you have the technique to get right back on the board the top speed is very respectable, although there is a slight lack of real freeride poise and balance compared to other boards of a similar style. However, it’s a very nice gyber, smooth and easy to initiate the turn and gripping beautifully. It requires good technique to maintain top speed through the turn, but you can really carve it around hard and tight and it stays composed throughout. It coped absolutely fine in waves, and is also more than capable of more freestyle moves than most boards of a similar style can manage.
GUESTERS’ VIEW
Above averagely popular in general, scoring a top recommendation from one of the Guest testers and favourable reports from most others.
FITTINGS
The board comes with a very good 27cm fin which worked well with the smaller sail sized - if you’re aiming to use the board primarily with bigger sails then get a bigger fin too.
OVERALL
Very much an all-rounder, and thus a few inevitable compromises. The flat deck reduces the ultimate freeride comfort slightly, but enhances the freestyle potential, and overall it s a little bit too technical to get a top recommendation. Nevertheless, it does do a bit of everything pretty well, particularly for lighter and medium weight sailors. Best suited to sails from 5.5 to 7.0m.
